Update: California’s New Indoor Workplace Heat Illness Standards - NowApproved & in Effect
On July 23, 2024, Cal/OSHA’s “Heat Illness Prevention in Indoor Places of Employment" standard was approved by the Office of Administrative Law (OAL) and immediately went into effect. These new heat worker protections apply to most workplaces where the indoor temperature reaches 82°F, such as restaurants, warehouses, and manufacturing facilities. The regulation establishes required safety measures to prevent worker exposure to risk of heat illness (e.g., providing water, rest, cool-down areas, and training). Cal/OSHA’s new regulation aims to build on existing state-level heat standards, such as those inCaliforniaand several other states. Cal/OSHA Chief Debra Lee stated, “This regulation provides protections for workers across California and helps prepare employers to deal with the challenges of rising temperatures in indoor environments."
California employers are required to implement strategic and operational plans to address this new standard. For more information, download our infographic.
